Increasing diversity in apprenticeships

Our aim is to make apprenticeships available to everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability or learning difficulties. One way we aim to do this is by working with employers to create opportunities for people from all walks of life. Not only are we promoting opportunities to people from BME communities, but also promoting non-traditional careers to men and women. For example, we want to help women find apprenticeships in construction, and men find apprenticeships in childcare.
We also want to help people with disabilities and learning difficulties, to get their foot on the ladder by gaining qualifications while working.

Many apprenticeship programmes are under-represented by black and minority ethnic (BME) groups and those with disabilities and/or learning difficulties. We want to change this by working with employers, agencies and community organisations.

What we need
We welcome employers to employ BME and disabled apprentices. They will work four days a week with the employer and attend College one day a week working towards a qualification.

Depending on their role an apprentice can work towards a qualification in:
• Accounting
• Business Administration
• Beauty
• Childcare
• Construction
• Customer Service
• Fashion
• Hairdressing
• IT
• Marketing
• Railway Engineering
• Social Care

We would like to work with agencies and community organisations to promote apprentice opportunities to BME and disabled groups
